Gay Card (noun; pron: "gey-kahrd")
Urban Legend. The mythical figurative membership credential carried by
gay men and women to commemorate the innate knowledge, ability, or sensibility
with regard to any subject matter traditionally and generally considered
to be the purview and stereotype of gay culture. Such as show tunes, color
coordination, fashion, hairstyling, interior decoration, power tools,
softball, sports, U-Haul weddings, ownership of flannel or knowing whether
any particular person in the vicinity is gay without requiring them to
present their gay card.
Market Power
A recent survey by Simmons, an Experian company, estimated that the gay,
lesbian, transgender and bisexual community represents over 0 billion
annually in purchasing power and growing.
Imagine if we as a community would focus
just a small portion of our spending power on GLBT owned and socially
responsible businesses that did not discriminate and supported the GLBT
community. How successful would our community be if those dollars were
funneled back into our community? We would send a strong message to corporate
America and society in general when we spend our money to make a statement
and allow the power of the free market to establish our equality.
Building a
Movement
Individually we can make a difference but collectively we create a movement.
It’s time to flex our economic strength, to push forward with who
we are, what we represent without regret and without apology.
Self-esteem, self-worth, empowerment and
self-sufficiency; the goal for our program is to unite the community by
harnessing our buying power within our community. We will use a portion
of the profits from our endeavors to assist with programs and events that
positively affect our community that continues to grow as more people
accept their sexually and come out of the shadows.
We offer a discount card to members but
through the business alliance we want to build the network for business
to personal as well as business to business marketing efforts. For success
we need businesses to join the business alliance and network offering
incentives for members and non-members alike to make a difference to support
the economic development of our community.
The initial version of the card will be
the discount card and customer loyalty program. Additional versions are
pre-paid debit and branded gift cards with the eventual target of a branded
credit card. Those are still in development depending on market acceptance
and desires.
